McDonaldization of Education

Weber argued that the society was actively moving away from traditional ways of life to an increasingly rationalized way of life. He uses the example of bureaucracy and the increasing reliance on technology to support his idea of rationalization. Bureaucracy, for Max Weber, and McDonaldization, for George Ritzer, represent a rigid dehumanized society that limits human freedom and is becoming so economically rational that it, in turn, becomes individually and creatively irrational. This phenomenon has become exceptionally relevant and dangerous because as increasing and changing technology have encouraged globalization, this “iron cage” affects and changes not one culture but many cultures throughout the world. Please read the following article: https://www.corwin.com/sites/default/files/upm-binaries/16567_Chapter_2.pdf QUESTIONS: How does McDonaldization affect your family’s everyday life? How has McDonaldization affected your educational or workplace experience? Be sure to examine each quality of McDonaldization and provide specific examples of each. Look at micro (life choices, values, educational experience, day-to-day interaction, work experience in and outside the home, depth of friendships and family interactions, etc.) and macro level (ability to delay procreation, changing gender roles, impact on the elderly, homogenization of material and non-material culture, etc.) In your opinion, does this increasing reliance on technology benefit or hinder familial relationships?
